DESCRIPTION – acute encephalitis syndrome is a group of clinical neurological manifestations. A wide range of viruses, bacteria, fungus, parasites, spirochetes, chemicals and toxins can be potential causes. It describes an acute, usually diffuse, inflammatory process that affects the brain.

METHODOLOGY – multiplex polymerase chain reaction

SPECIMEN REQUIERED –

• COLLECT – cerebrospinal fluid
• SPECIMEN PREPARATION – transport 1 ml of CSF to transport tube
• STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
• STABILITY – ambient: 24 hours; refrigerated: 1 week
