DESCRIPTION – mutation in the NPM1 gene are involved in a form of blood cell cancer known as cytogenetically normal acute myeloid leukemia
METHODOLOGY – polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
TURN AROUND TIME – 8 days
PATIENT PREPARATION –
COLLECT – lavender (EDTA) or bone marrow
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – transport 5 ml whole blood or 3 ml bone marrow. Specimens must be received within 48 hours of collection due to liability of RNA. Transport 40 micro liter of RNA
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – bone marrow or whole blood should be critically refrigerated and extracted RNA should be critically frozen
STABILITY – ambient: 1 hour; refrigerated: 48 hours; frozen: indefinitely (extracted RNA)
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS – serum, plasma, CSF, extracted DNA, clotted specimens
