DESCRIPTION – a magnesium blood test measures the amount of magnesium in your blood. Magnesium is a type of electrolyte. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals that are responsible for many important functions and processes in your body. Your body needs magnesium to help your muscles, nerves, and heart work properly
METHODOLOGY – quantitative spectrophotometry
TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours
SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – plasma separator or serum separator tube
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow serum tube to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of serum to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated
STABILITY – ambient: 1 week; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 1 year
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – hemolyzed specimens, specimens collected in EDTA, oxalate/fluoride
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
